When working high above the ground, wind loads can be strong and hinder work or endanger workers or the equipment. Workers may also be ill at ease when looking down from great heights. Hence an adequate protection is essential in high-rise construction. The MEVA Guided Screens protection system MGS encloses complete floors protecting workers and equipment against wind and weather. Together with other MEVA systems, MGS is in use on an office tower that is being built in a mixed residential and office area outside Zurich.
The 18-storey office tower is the highest building in the new area and in 2013 will become the headquarters of the Allianz Suisse insurance. The tower has a sophisticated design with a trapezoidal layout. Projecting slabs, multistorey halls inside the building and varying slab widths are mastered with flexible MEVA formwork solutions.
Maximum safety is a key issue
Together with the Swiss accidence insurance SUVA and before starting work on the site, MEVA engineers developed a detailed safety concept that defines the safety-related equipment and measures for all floors and work steps. Maximum fall-down protection at slab edges was a major concern and this is why the MGS protection system was chosen.
MGS: Safe assembly on the ground, maximum protection in the air
The MGS system consists of single screen units. Their sizes and configuration can be planned and choosen to perfectly match the building layoutand floor heights. Parts of the units arrive pre-assembled on the site where the final assembly is done safely on the ground. The enclosures are closed trapezoidal sheets that vertically fully project over the top floor where work is in progress.
Quick lift, safe attachment
Each unit is separately flown to the building‘s facade, levelled and suspended with its guiding profiles to the guiding shoes that were pre-installed on the floors. The units remain anchored to the building throughout the construction period. Safe attachment and safe working conditions are ensured all the time at any height, also when climbing to the next floor. Crane-lifting and attaching a unit to the building takes only 10 minutes, crane-lifting a unit to the next floor only 5 minutes. Maximum fall-down protection is given all the time, there is only a small gap of about 3 cm between the screens to avoid friction when lifting the units.
Fall-down protection without gaps
As some lower floors have projecting slabs and other obstacles at the facade, the MGS units could not be used all around the building on the lower floors. This is why up to 5th floor platforms with secondary platforms such as MEVA‘s KAB 190 are used as working platforms and as fall-down protection for some parts of the building. Protective grids and guard-railings are installed on all floors before lifting the KAB 190 platforms and MGS units to the next floor.
